For our gardens, yellow raspberries are not a very common and interesting culture. Today, many gardeners are trying to grow it and for this we need to consider our recommendations.
The benefits of yellow raspberries for the human body
Most red berries are capable of causing allergic reactions due to the content of anthocyanins - substances responsible for the violet, blue and red color of parts of plants. Therefore, it is recommended that young children, pregnant women and people with allergies, use them with extreme caution, and possibly even turn their attention to berries of other colors. Such as, for example, yellow raspberries.
This berry is not widespread among gardeners, but having a number of significant advantages, it can take pride of place in gardens at summer residents. Features of the biochemical composition of yellow raspberry berries are as follows:
- low amount of organic acids;
- high content of sugars, folic acid or vitamin B9;
- the presence of minerals such as iron and copper.
Yellow raspberries are widely popular in traditional methods of treatment. Apply as:
- diaphoretic, with fever, ODS;
- a remedy that stabilizes body temperature for colds;
- decoctions of leaves, relieve cough, in complex therapy;
- berries regulate digestion;
- natural antidepressant and sedative.
The best varieties
Be sure to select the best varieties of delicious yellow raspberries at your summer cottage. Indeed, today there are quite a large number of them and each variety has certain qualities.
Amber
Known in Russia for over 30 years. Virtually unaffected by pests, in addition a winter-hardy variety. Productivity of about 3 kg from the bush, removed for 5 approaches. Ripening is medium late. Berries are not the largest, but not small, on average 4 g, amber color, rounded. Easy to transport.
Runaway
Bred by the famous Russian breeder I. Kazakov. This variety has larger fruits, weighing up to 5 g, in comparison with the previous one, refers to early ripening. It tolerates frosty winters, this allows you to successfully grow crops in Central Russia. Productivity is 2.5-3 kg from one bush.
Apricot
Bred in 1996. Sufficiently fruitful variety, characterized by the harvest in the year of planting. One of unpretentious, frost-resistant varieties. Bushes reach a height of up to 1.6 m, slightly spreading. The ability to shoot is medium, which will allow less pruning.
The features include the fact that:
- after complete ripening, absolutely all the berries fall off;
- in rainy weather, the taste of berries may deteriorate;
- raspberry bush garter is needed annually;
- can be affected by such a viral disease as "raspberry dwarfism."
Yellow dessert
This raspberry variety was bred in Russia in the postwar years. This happened at the Mountain Experiment Station. Belongs to early ripening, the average yield is 2 kg from one bush, raspberry berries are small, weighing up to 2 g. The plant usually does not exceed a height of 1.5 m, a rather sprawling bush. This variety is non-repairing. The spikes are not prickly.
Yellow giant
This variety is distinguished by a "giant" berry, weighing as much as 6 g, yield is also at a fairly high level - up to 6 kg from one bush. Frost resistance is low, it requires shelter shoots. Ripening is medium early. Bushes reach 2.5 m, which makes it necessary to establish supports and carry out tying.
With careful care, signs of remontance are manifested, but in this variety the shoots are not completely cut, because it is precisely the second year that is characterized by the main abundant fruiting.
Golden autumn
The berries are quite large - up to 5-7 g, dense, which ensures good transportability. Productivity is average, up to 2.5 kg per bush. Fruits in mid-August until the first days of October. The bushes are medium, not higher than 2 m, the spreading is weak. High immunity to diseases is characteristic.
Golden domes
The berries of this variety are characterized by a slight acidity, severe pubescence, weight up to 6 g. It tolerates winter cold, unpretentious and quite fruitful - more than 2 kg of fruits from the bush. The variety is characterized by low rates of shoot formation. The height of the bushes is up to 1.5 m. It is frost-resistant, leaving one rhizome under the snow.
Orange miracle
The fruits of the variety are quite large, reach 8 g. Capricious is a view of drafts, no sheltering of bushes for winter is required. Bushes up to 2 m high, grow quite slowly. Berries even ripened remain on the bush, do not fall.
Growing this variety, you can not update raspberries for 15 years, while the main qualities of the variety remain at a high level. The only raspberry variety that allows ripening berries on cuttings placed in water. It is because of this quality that florists use the variety to create unique bouquets.
Sweetened yellow
Differs in high productivity exceeding 3 kg from a bush. Berries weighing up to 6 g do not crumble for a long time, which is very nice. The bushes are sprawling, so gardeners often use wire fencing to form a bush. The disadvantages include low mobility of berries and low frost resistance, it is necessary to cover additionally.
Yaroslavna (Brusvyana)
The variety was bred by Ukrainian breeders, therefore it is well adapted specifically for the climatic conditions of Ukraine, and in Russia it is recommended for cultivation only in the southern regions. Mid-ripening variety with an extended fruiting period: from early June to the first frosts. Productivity is up to 3.5 kg, weight of berries is up to 9 g. Bush up to 1.7 m high, branches slightly.
Almost all the popular varieties of yellow raspberries are referred to as repair ones - these are plants capable of long-term fruiting, both on the shoots of young and last year.
Growing Yellow Raspberries
To grow yellow raspberries you need to get high yields. Our recommendations will help you do this.
Choosing a place to land
An ideal place for planting yellow raspberry seedlings would be illuminated areas where water stagnation is excluded and drafts are absent. Experienced agronomists recommend arranging rows from north to south or from northwest to southwest, especially in regions with short and cold summers.
It is advisable to plant raspberries on a plot with a slope of no more than 8 degrees, and it is better to be completely flat. If solanaceous crops used to grow on the site, then it is worth looking for another place, because there is a high probability of raspberry damage by verticillar wilting. The soil after the raspberry is also not suitable, it needs rest for 5 years.
Perfect soil for yellow raspberries
The highest yields can be obtained if raspberries are planted on sandy and light loamy soils. If this is not possible, then it will be necessary to provide more thorough care for the crop. They exclude planting on heavy acidic soils, because the effort expended does not justify the resulting meager harvest.
Landing time
Yellow raspberries are planted in autumn: from September to October, for the southern regions it is possible to increase the period or spring planting. During this period, it is important to prevent frost damage to the first roots.
The subtleties of care
Care for yellow raspberries should be of high quality. It is necessary to provide fertilizer, watering, garter and pruning. Only under such conditions will you get a good harvest.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer application time depends on how the crop was planted. The trench method is the most popular and implies compliance with the following sizes: the width of the trench is 0.5-0.6 m, and the row spacing is 1.2-1.6 m.
The density is maintained based on the variety, but not less than 0.4 m, while the seedlings are not deepened. This method of planting postpones the application of fertilizing.
If another method is used, then it is worth adding nitrogen, especially in the first couple of years after planting, because it is during this period of growth that the plant especially needs nitrogen fertilizers. It is recommended to be introduced in early spring, but some agronomists are divided into two parts and one is introduced in autumn.
Most often, urea diluted with water is used. Other elements (phosphorus, potassium, boron, iron, manganese) contribute if necessary. On your personal plot you can use manure, as well as ash.
Watering
Yellow raspberries should be abundantly watered, this contributes to the development of a powerful rhizome and the penetration of roots into deeper layers of the soil. Like any other raspberry, without proper rooting, yellow will grow with great speed and cause a lot of trouble.
In the southern regions of the country, it is recommended to water yellow raspberries at least 6 times during the growing season. In the middle latitudes, 2-4 times is enough. Usually watered by furrows or by sprinkling.
Garter
Varieties of yellow raspberries with a lush bush need a garter, otherwise the plant will crumble in different directions. In the first month of spring, dig in the pillars and pull the trellis on them. It is advisable to tie a bush in three places: at the level of 1.2 m from the ground and a couple of branches below.
Pruning
Although, through the efforts of breeders, a large number of rather unpretentious varieties of yellow raspberries have been bred, but pruning is still a determining factor in increasing yields.
Repairing varieties are cut almost completely in the fall before frosts, and during fruiting only shoots from which the crop is already harvested are removed. Do not ignore this care, as thickening of remont raspberries leads to a significant decrease in productivity.
Non-repairing varieties are cut twice a year to increase branching.
Shelter for the winter
Varieties of yellow raspberries bred in the southern regions or in the central part of the country, so in these regions you can not hide the bushes. High frost resistance allows you to tolerate winter well.
In the northern regions of Siberia, given the more severe winter conditions, it is still worth taking care of shelter with dry grass or land. To do this, the bushes are bent and tied so that their height does not exceed 0.4 m.
Propagation of yellow raspberries
Yellow raspberries propagate mainly by seedlings or cuttings. But making an effort, you can get an adult bush from seeds, but this is a less popular method. Raspberry seeds are quite low germination, require special preparation for sowing. Sometimes yellow raspberries are propagated by dividing the bush into 4-5 parts, which gives a good result.
Interestingly, yellow raspberries appeared as a result of an ordinary, red mutation. It was this failure that helped breeders in the USA, Russia, Ukraine and other countries to breed a huge number of varieties of this species.
Gardeners reviews
Anastasia Pavlovna, 65 years old, summer resident, Moscow.Once having seen a fresh bush of raspberries from a neighbor in the country, all sprinkled with bright yellow berries like amber, I wanted to have the same beauty. And, remembering about my diabetes, and the possibility of eating yellow raspberries almost without regard to the disease, it was decided to breed this in my garden.
Valery, 38 years old, gardener, Chelyabinsk.I have been growing yellow raspberries of the Yellow Giant variety for many years. The conditions of Siberia do not interfere with getting 2-3 buckets of berries annually from a relatively small area. I don’t make any special efforts in growing, all the same as for the rest of the garden: manure, loosening, weeding.
The disadvantages include strong growth, if not cut in time, it will fill the entire garden. We pick berries all summer, juicy, sweet, large enough. That we do not eat, we freeze for the winter, and we are saved during an epidemic of colds.
Olga, 29 years old, summer resident, Donetsk.By chance, as they say, almost for surrender, a sapling of yellow raspberries of the Golden Autumn variety acquired. And what was my surprise when, in the same summer, they received almost 2 kg of berries, it would seem, from a small first-year bush. But personally, I like red raspberries more tastefully, not as sweetly sweet as yellow. But the children are completely delighted, both in taste and in color, so they decided to still get a couple of bushes.
